BIOGRAPHY

Bernal was born in Bogotá, Colombia. He is the oldest child of his family. He initially focused on and excelled at mountain biking, winning races in Brazil, Costa Rica, and the United States. In 2016, Bernal was signed by Gianni Savio to the Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec team on a four year contract.

During his first year as a PRO, Bernal finished 4th overall in Tour de l'Avenir that has numerous future star riders in its winner list. In the next year, Bernal made his debut in Lombardia (The Monument), and finished 13th, which was quite impressive. At the age of 20, with such excellent performance, he caught the attention of Team SKY (the predecessor of Team INEOS).

In 2018, Bernard joined Team SKY and made his TOUR debut, he made indelible contributions to Thomas's yellow jersey in mountainous stages. At the same time, he was even able to maintain 15th place. 2019 Tour de France, Thomas rode as team leader, while Bernard still played the role of domestique. When peloton came to Alps, Bernard showed great recovery ability in Grand Tour. In the first two stages at Alps, he attacked aggressively, beat all GC rivals and came to first place in general classification after stage 19.

After the honorary ride and final sprint on Champs Elysees, Egan Bernard became the first Colombian Tour de France champion in history! He is also the youngest Tour France champion since 1909 and the third youngest Tour France champion in history!
