Alberto Contador, the Tour de France Legend, will be present at the 2017 Le Tour de France Škoda China Critérium on October 29th. He will join the league of professional cyclists including Chris Froome and Warren Barguil, to put on a top-class race that the Chinese audiences have never experienced. This will also be one of the last professional races for Contador, which brings extra significance for the local cycling fans.
Contador’s legend starts from 2007, in which year he won the Tour de France with the Discovery Channel team in the age of 24. Not many cyclists can achieve such result, winning the Yellow Jersey as well as the White Jersey in the same year.
He won the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España consecutively the year after in 2008, then won Tour de France again by beating Andy Schleck in 2010, as well as the 2011 Giro d'Italia and the 2012 Vuelta a España. Although it later emerged that he had tested positive for clenbuterol during the race. After a long battle in court, he was suspended by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and stripped of his 2010 Tour and 2011 Giro wins, and has been suspended from racing for two years.
During the two years of his suspension, many strong contenders emerged including Chris Froome, but the Spaniard remains competitive after his return. In 2014 he beat Froome to win the Vuelta once more. He also won the 2015 Giro by keep the maglia rosa to the last stage, passing 31 rivals consecutively in the 16 stage alone.
Next month, Contador’s career will come to its end in Shanghai. October 29th will surely be a special day for many cycling fans.
